UTM admits mistakes in controversial utm-admits-mistakes-in-controversial-slides
PETALING JAYA: Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan has cleared the air on a couple of university presentation slides considered demeaning to Hindu and Sikh faiths.
In a Facebook post, Kamalanathan said he spoke to the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) vice-chancellor (VC), who acknowledged the “mistake”.
Earlier today, the slides, which touched on Hinduism and Sikhism, went viral as outraged netizens condemned the slides.
Among the controversial points in the slides were that Islam introduced the meaning of politeness and personal hygiene to Hindus in India.
Another slide also claimed that “Sikhism founder Kabir” did not fully understand Islam and was influenced by the surrounding Hindu community.
According to Kamalanathan, the VC said the necessary corrections to the module concerned would be done expeditiously.
“I also asked him to ensure that such errors were not repeated as they could cause confusion and hurt in some segments of students, besides not being factual,” said the MIC Central Working Committee member.
MIC Youth Chief C Sivarraajh had taken UTM to task earlier over the slides.
He said UTM should look for ways to improve the quality of education and correct the knowledge and intellectual capacity of its lecturers and academics.
“Don’t become the laughing stock among academicians and universities around the world,” he said on his Facebook page.
